Grundtvig's Church

During our recent trip to Denmark, we found ourselves within the Bispebjerg neighborhood in Copenhagen, where the Grundtvig's Church is situated. The distinct facade sets it apart from the surrounding buildings, making it an attractive destination for visitors. On the day we visited, the space within was illuminated with the most beautiful lighting. There's an unadorned elegance that gives a sense of ancient intensity and simplicity. The majestic columns and arches within the interior create an ephemeral atmosphere.

The church's story began in 1913 when Peder Vilhelm Jensen-Klint won a public competition to construct a church in honor of Danish philosopher and hymn writer N. F. S. Grundtvig. It wasn't until September 8, 1921, that the foundation for the new church was finally laid.

The primary construction phase occurred between 1921 and 1926, culminating in the completion of the tower section and the initial opening of the church, known as the Tower Church, in 1927. The church's definitive completion, following the passing of its architect Klint in 1930, came in 1940 under the skilled hands of his son, Kaare Klint.
