Louisiana Museum of Modern Art

Imagine standing on the enchanting Danish coast, surrounded by lush greenery, salty breeze in your hair and the soothing sound of calm waters by the shore.
In this idyllic setting, you find yourself stepping into another world: the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, known as the Louisiana.

Located in the coastal town of Humlebæk, approximately 40 minutes train ride to the north of Copenhagen, the Louisiana is a world-renowned art museum known for its breathtaking location, art collection, and unique architectural design.

Back in 1958, a visionary Danish businessman and art collector named Knud W. Jensen set out to create a space where contemporary art and culture could flourish for the public.

One of the most striking features of the Louisiana Museum is its awe-inspiring natural surroundings. Nestled within expansive parkland overlooking the Øresund Strait, the museum offers panoramic views that stretch across the waters, separating Denmark from Sweden. It's a view that takes your breath away and sets the stage for the entire time you spend at this place. The outdoor area is filled with works by artists, including Alexander Calder and Henry Moore to name a few. The atmosphere is alive with a sense of tranquility.

The museum has expanded over the years with additional wings and galleries, all incredibly designed to enhance the experience. As you step inside the museum building, designed by architects Vilhelm Wohlert and Jørgen Bo, the sleek, modernist architecture seamlessly merges with an inviting atmosphere, creating a space that is as visually stunning as it is welcoming. Natural materials like wood and brick infuse the interior spaces with warmth while large panoramic windows frame the views of the surrounding landscape.

The museum has an impressive permanent collection of contemporary and modern art from around the world, and the museum hosts a diverse range of temporary exhibitions, often exploring themes such as contemporary art, design, and architecture. The Louisiana also plays host to temporary exhibitions, lectures, film screenings, concerts, and performances, creating a unique and vibrant atmosphere, ensuring that each visit offers a fresh experience.

Before you leave, make sure to visit the Louisiana's exceptional bookshop, filled with artistic inspiration. And if you are hungry, the museum's café and restaurant offer delicious seasonal meals, inspired by the flavours of Denmark while soaking in the picturesque surroundings. Or you can just enjoy a coffee, or a book in the garden overlooking the Øresund sea.

In essence, the Louisiana Museum is so much more than just a museum. It’s a magical destination where art and nature live in harmony and creativity is celebrated. Each visit is truly a sensory experience. Its stunning location, exceptional art collection, and showcasing the best of the artistic world make it a haven for art enthusiasts, dreamers, and anyone seeking to be inspired by the extraordinary.

The Louisiana is quite possibly one of our most loved museums to visit to recharge, and get inspired.
